About Lead Service Lines in Chicago
Chicago has one of the highest numbers of lead service lines in the United States. Homes built before 1986 are more likely to have lead pipes, fixtures, and solder.
Lead in drinking water can cause serious health problems, especially for children and pregnant women. Even low levels of lead exposure can affect brain development and cause learning and behavior problems.
If you're concerned about lead in your water, consider:
- Getting your water tested for lead
- Using a water filter certified to remove lead
- Running cold water for 5 minutes before using it for drinking or cooking
- Checking if you qualify for Chicago's lead service line replacement program
